Scope of the research team
The Research Team on Structural Diagnostics and Analyses is part of the Department of Civil Engineering of the Institute of Smart Technology and Engineering and is active in national and international professional organizations, has extensive industrial connections and in specific areas (e.g., non-destructive testing) has a unique laboratory background and methodology. Sub-units: Materials and Structural Analysis Research Team, Smart Diagnostic Techniques Research Team, Sustainable Load-Bearing Structures Research Team. The main areas of our research are related to the construction industry, with the main objective of increasing the structural safety of the built environment and promoting its economical and environmentally responsible maintenance. Besides structural safety, an important part of our research is investigating the adverse effects of construction materials on human health and the reduction of environmental impact through recycling industrial and construction waste materials. Our main research areas are: 1. Non-destructive testing of structural materials properties and deterioration processes 2. Structural assessment using combined non-destructive diagnostic methods 3. Optimized diagnostic procedures for historic structures 4. Structural safety of existing structures 5. Durability and life expectancy of load-bearing structures 6. Structural stability and resilience testing using satellite radar interferometry 7. Reinforcement of structures with high performance near-surface systems 8. Construction applications of high performance cementitious bonded materials 9. Self-healing waterproofing concretes 10. Recycled concrete products |

Research objectives of the research team
The primary goal of our research programme is to develop and promote practical applications of processes and materials that make our built environment safer and more economically sustainable. This includes testing and, where necessary, improving the structural safety of our existing buildings, increasing the durability of the materials that make up our buildings, enabling them to adapt to ever-changing loads and environmental impacts and thus increase their service life, and also reducing adverse environmental impacts associated with construction and maintenance. The main activity of the research team is to carry out certification, expert analysis, R&D and educational tasks related to construction industry, but in the future, we also wish to be involved in research related to the environment, building energetics and other advanced materials sciences (e.g., 3D printing or nanotechnology). An important objective of our research is to ensure that our results are marketable, but also that new scientific results are regularly published. We attach particular importance to the active participation of students in our laboratory and field work and in our publication activities. We regularly integrate our research results into teaching activities, including the development of new courses and curricula at BSc, MSc, and PhD levels. |
