The revitalisation of historic buildings through functional change 

A building is built for a well-defined purpose, i.e., it has a specific function throughout its history. Once the original user's intentions have changed, it can be adapted to a new role. If, however, for whatever reason, the purpose that ensured their survival, use and survival ceased to exist, they would become dilapidated. This can be prevented by careful planning of the new functions of listed buildings, by accurate assessment and analysis of needs - and by matching these results with the existing building fabric.

Modernity and tradition

Studying the increasingly diverse trends in contemporary architecture now offers many lessons: buildings in everyday use either justify design intentions or encourage revision. Using these studies and analyses and the lessons learned from vernacular and historic buildings in Hungary, we seek a coherent answer to what opportunities and tasks the rising generation of architects face in today's Hungarian context (environment, economy, sustainability, public taste, culture of use).

The impact of research on vernacular architectural heritage on building design 

Vernacular architecture is logical. It is adapted to life and nature, and its system of rules is known and accepted. However, in contemporary building design practice, this is less evident: the primitive nature of many buildings is surprisingly in contrast with the environment. The research analyses the continuity of traditional architecture and the influence of common sense on architecture and proposes the development of an authentic, timeless architectural attitude and language through a specific architectural work of its own.

Modern methods of renovation/representation of architectural heritage

The possibilities for modern restoration of domestic monuments are limited in two senses. First, the restoration of previously demolished and deteriorated monuments and buildings, which have been reduced to the ground, has always been influenced by the prevailing economic framework, and as a result, there have been and still are very few opportunities in Hungary to carry out large-scale or even small-scale conservation or, in the best case, restoration. Keeping in mind the problem of sustainable development, we must focus on preventing the deterioration of the current building stock and modernizing it, as we cannot keep expanding our buildings at the expense of the land, etc. New ways of doing this can be found by exploring possible new avenues and taking advantage of today's technological advances. I have set myself the task of researching and developing the principles of these methods (using a concrete architectural example).

Modern and innovative methods of architectural heritage conservation

The possibilities for restoration of domestic monuments and listed buildings are often limited in several respects. In addition to economic constraints, the restoration of deteriorated monuments and buildings with lost utility value is also affected by the feasibility of reuse. As a result, there are few opportunities for full-scale conservation of monuments and buildings while preserving their original function. In the context of sustainable development, however, there is an increasing need to focus on the current building stock. By preventing further deterioration, modernizing buildings extensively, and redefining their functions, we can prevent the built environment from expanding at the expense of natural living space. By exploring new avenues and taking advantage of today's technological advances, new methods can be implemented in this respect. However, research into these methods, developing their principles (illustrated by specific architectural examples), and studying and modeling their effects are challenging for both present and future professionals.

Revitalization and rethinking of office spaces to meet the challenges of the 21st century

A building is built for a well-defined purpose, i.e., to fulfill a specific function throughout its history. A building can become obsolete without changing the original user's intentions, as we can see from the amortization of office buildings, even those that are a few decades old, due to the information technology revolution. However, sustainable development needs to revalue the current building stock. By comprehensively modernizing buildings and rethinking their layout and operating systems - with particular attention to the requirements of flexible space design - we can create well-functioning and usable spaces for many decades to come while increasing productivity and user satisfaction. This can be demonstrated and achieved through the example of several domestic office buildings of the 1960s and 1970s type by accurately assessing needs, analyzing expected trends, careful design, and matching these results with the existing building fabric.
